The Kanabec County Sheriff’s Office will continue to participate in the Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) partnership this year with another grant from the TZD Enforcement Grant Program. A total of $36,000 was awarded to five local agencies for the fiscal year beginning October 1st, 2012. Participating agencies include the sheriff’s offices in Kanabec, Isanti and Pine counties as well as the Isanti and Braham city police departments.

These agencies will dedicate additional officers’ time to enforcement efforts with twice as much grant funding as in 2010. Increased enforcement will focus on seat belt use in October and May, impaired driving in December and from mid-August thru Labor Day, distracted driving in April and speed in July. Agencies are also encouraged to respond to the needs in their communities with additional enforcement efforts. Kanabec County has chosen to also focus on impaired driving during the Kanabec County Fair.

The TZD Enforcement program is administered by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety, which provides federal funds to law enforcement agencies to conduct enhanced traffic enforcement. Their office also funds the Toward Zero Deaths Safe Roads Program. For more on Kanabec County’s Safe Roads Program, click here.
