Teen Marijuana Use: Tips for Parents

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA), heavy marijuana use among U.S. teens is up 80% since 2008.   Data from the 2010 Minnesota Student Survey (MSS) shows that 20% of 9th graders and 28% of 12th graders in Kanabec County used marijuana in the past 30 days.  The MSS is administered every three years and the 2013 data will be available sometime this Fall.

What can parents do to prevent drug use?

  • Monitor behavior
  • Be proactive and stay informed
  • Be a positive role model
  • Strong parental disapproval
