Prescription Drugs PciMINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Senator Amy Klobuchar announced a bipartisan bill to fight prescription drug abuse passed the Senate Judiciary Committee today.

The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act includes provisions to expand prevention and educational efforts, as well as strengthen the programs that track prescription drugs.

“As a former prosecutor, I have seen firsthand the devastating effects drug abuse can have on families in Minnesota and across the country,” Klobuchar said. “Today’s vote brings us one step closer to passing this critical bipartisan legislation and giving communities the tools they need to combat drug abuse.”

Klobuchar also said stopping prescription drug abuse is key to addressing the larger drug problem.

“People would be shocked,” she said, “because four out of five heroin users now got their start by legal prescription drugs.”

The bill will now move to the full Senate for a vote.
